An image of a news report shared with a claim that the UP government has introduced 6% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on Sunday Church Mass offertory money is morphed.
After taking charge of the office of US President, President, Joe Biden has ended the 'Muslim travel ban', which blocked travel to the United States from several predominantly Muslim and African countries. Following this, an image showing a large group of men offering namaz in front of the US Capitol Hill is viral on social media claiming the image is from the Friday prayer held at the foot of the Capitol Hill after Biden became the US President.
A Facebook user shared the image with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Joe Biden's new America in front of Capitol Hill on Friday.”
Several other Facebook users have also shared this image with the same claim.
The image is also doing rounds on Twitter with the same claim.
In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. This image dates back to September 2009. It is from an “Islam on Capitol Hill” prayer service held at the US Capitol. According to the organisers, the prayer was intended to inspire American Muslims and non-Muslims alike to work together for the common good.
With the help of reverse image search, we found this carried in a news report published by IB Times that has a caption, "Muslims say prayer during the 'Islam on Capitol Hill 2009' event at the West Front Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Sept. 25, 2009 in Washington, DC. Thousands of Muslims gathered for the event to promote the diversity of Islam."
We also found this image on Getty Images stating that the image shows Muslims praying during the "Islam on Capitol Hill 2009" event at the West Front Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on September 25, 2009 in Washington, DC. Thousands of Muslims gathered for the event to promote the diversity of Islam.
As per a report on Snopes, the organisers held the event inspired from the inaugural address made by Barack Obama in January 2009 on mutual interest and mutual respect.
In conclusion, a decade-old image from September 2009 is being widely shared on social media is being shared with a false claim that it shows Friday prayer held at the foot of the Capitol Hill after Biden became the US President.
